Name: Milty Evens City: Chicago, Illinois Style: House Where to find: Touring Chicago and the globe
Question: EM - Welcome and thanks for interviewing with us. You and I have worked together in the past as well as partied together but it’s been a while. How are things? Your label Whitebeard Records is doing well I see. Can you tell us more about what’s happening with it? Answer: DJ - Things are going well just trying to stay busy. I actually have dropped the Uncle and DJ and I produce and play my soulful music under Milty Evans, I have an alias under Klosed Kaption where I DJ/produce my tech & progressive music, it’s easier to separate styles so people won’t get confused. My label is doing well and I focus most of my time on producing for myself and others. There is so much good talent here in Chi and can stay busy, if you want to of course.
Question: EM - Chicago is known as the birthplace of House. What would you tell our non-Chicago readers about the scene and where to find it when visiting Chicago? Answer: DJ - LoL! Well first off Chi was the birthplace of house but that was in the 80's quite a long time ago so as like anything, there is evolution & change. With that being said, you can find a more Ibiza/Miami style sound on the weekends at Spybar or Sound bar. If you’re looking for that soulful house sound-your best bet is to go out during the week. Monday at Boom Boom Room is an institution (I’m also a resident there) hosting guest DJ’s from Louie Vega, Blaze, Sneak, to Mark Farina. Wednesday night at Evil Olive is a showcase of Chicago producers & DJ’s. The best way to find what you’re looking for when you come to Chicago is to look online. Everyone is networking and you can find what you’re looking for.
Question: EM - We’ve seen how Chicago influenced the dance scene all over the world. Who is Chicago’s influence today or where do you think Chicago is looking to as far as the club and music scene is concerned? Answer: DJ - Well to be honest some of the hottest producers in the game live here in Chi. It depends on what style you’re looking at? Jumpsmokers is one of the hottest remixers for major labels. Mariah Carey asked them to remix her latest album. Ron Carroll is one of the busiest producers out now. Mixin Marc had a hit remix of Taio Cruz that lead the Jersey Shore CD. Gene Farris somehow finds time to produce in between traveling back and forth from Europe. Tony Arzadon, Ralphi Rosario, Lex da Funk, Andre Harris, Aaron Smith and Lego (just to name a few) are big name cats here. I don’t think it’s just one person it’s about the quality of music you put out and the level of success it reaches. Because there are so many good producers here, you’re only as big as your last remix!!! So you have to keep working.
Question: EM - Your hometown is very diverse. It seems that you have gained a big European following in the last few years and we can also hear it in some of the tracks you play. The crowds love it. Would you say you’re the first to blend a Chicago style house set with a Southeastern European sound? Answer: DJ - : I don’t know if I was the first but as a Greek Mythology major in college or what but I was very into European culture and music. I used to go Moda Wednesdays hosting DJ’s like Gogos form Space Mykonos and other Euro parties in Chicago and made friends with a lot of Europeans, I was turned on to different styles. Over time, DJing in Chicago gave me chances to play these parties and mix a little Chi house with a Euro sound, it wasn’t being done, so I stood out a lot when I played these parties and made fans/friends. Over time I would have my Euro friends come to my house parties & my house friends come to my Euro parties. In the end, it’s just about good people and good music, the rest is just bullsh*t!
Question: EM - When and where can someone find you playing in Chicago? Answer: DJ - Well I’m the resident at the Boom Boom Room @ Green Dolphin on Monday Nights (youtube it to see the madness) and one off's at places like Cresendo & Spy Bar when I’m in town. Currently I’m remixing for E-man, CeCe Peniston, Fast Eddie, 1200 Warriors & Aaron Smith. As I mainly these days focus on producing, you can catch my music on beatport.com or traxsource.com
Question: EM - Thank you for the interview you and we wish you good luck on all you do. Answer: DJ - Sas ef̱charistó̱! (Thank You!)
